Compassionate care makes a difference.
The American Cancer Society estimates that over 193,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year. Medical advances and an increase in the number of mammograms administered have significantly brought down the mortality rate of breast cancer patients. Until a cure is found, early detection is crucial for successful treatment. STAT Surgical offers many state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques right here close to home in San Antonio, TX.
The advanced diagnostic care you can count on.
When a patient has a breast lump or an abnormal mammogram, the next step is to be referred to a board-certified surgeon for further evaluation. Frequently, a biopsy is required to definitively identify the cause of the abnormality. Several biopsy techniques are available depending on the circumstances, including fine-needle aspiration, stereotactic core biopsy and open surgical biopsy.
Dr. Donald Dilworth,
Dr. Edward Horvath and
Dr. Michael C. Albrecht, provide information to assist both patient and referring doctor in choosing the best procedure. The removal of tissue or fluid with a needle for examination under a microscope is called fine-needle aspiration. It is also called needle biopsy. This technique can often be used to help determine further surgical options such as open biopsy or more extensive procedures.
Conservative approaches & breast conservation therapy.
At STAT Surgical, we offer a number of techniques for the removal of benign and malignant breast lumps, masses, tissue and lymph nodes. Our goal is to give patients the best cosmetic results possible, when appropriate, through breast conservation therapy. Our surgeons are trained in advanced techniques such as sentinel lymph node biopsy in which we can find and remove the single lymph node most likely to be affected by cancer – the “sentinel” node – rather than removing 10 to 20 lymph nodes. This procedure causes less arm swelling and is considerably less painful than traditional lymph node biopsy.
